In 1940, the NSW Parliament laid the groundwork for the establishment of an Institute of Technology, leading to the formation of the New South Wales Institute of Technology (NSWIT) in 1964. Subsequent mergers and developments culminated in the granting of university status to NSWIT on 8 October 1987.
The University of Technology, Sydney, Act 1987 paved the way for the official reconstitution of NSWIT as UTS on 26 January 1988, incorporating the School of Design from the former Sydney College of the Arts. Further expansion occurred in 1989 with the absorption of the Kuring-gai College of Advanced Education (KCAE) and the Institute of Technical and Adult Teacher Education (ITATE) of the Sydney College of Advanced Education, solidifying UTS's academic structure.
Over the years, UTS underwent campus relocations and consolidations, including the closure of the Balmain campus in 1994 and the St Leonards campus in 2006.
