University Affiliation

However, changes occurred in 2009/10 when the university reviewed its School of Philosophy, Theology, and Religion. The review led to the termination of collaborative arrangements between the University of Birmingham and Queen's Foundation for both taught and research degrees. Instead, Newman University and the University of Gloucestershire stepped in to validate degree programs. The Queen's Graduate and Research Centre now offers postgraduate studies such as the Master of Arts in applied theological study, along with research opportunities for degrees like Master of Philosophy, Doctor of Theology, and Doctor of Philosophy.
Historical Architecture
The Queen's Foundation boasts historical architecture, including a residential block and lodge built in 1929–30 and a chapel constructed between 1938 and 1947. These structures were designed by a local architect named Holland W. Hobbiss. Notably, the chapel was the first English ecclesiastical building to feature an altar positioned for the celebrant to face the congregation. This architectural uniqueness adds to the charm and significance of the college.
Origins and Evolution
The origins of the Queen's Foundation trace back to Queens' College, established in Paradise Street, central Birmingham, in 1828. Initially serving as an Anglican-based medical school, Queens College expanded its educational offerings over time. Eventually, its non-theological departments merged with the nearby Mason Science College, which later became the University of Birmingham in 1900. This transition left Queen's College solely focused on theological education. In 1923, the college relocated to Somerset Road.
Selly Oak Centre for Mission Studies
In 2006, the Selly Oak Centre for Mission Studies was established as the successor to the United College of the Ascension, one of the former Selly Oak Colleges. It continues to receive support from the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and the Methodist Church.
