About

Leeds Conservatoire, previously known as The Leeds Music Centre, the City of Leeds College of Music, and Leeds College of Music, stands as a distinguished higher education music conservatoire situated in the Quarry Hill district of Leeds, England. Established in 1965 by Joseph Stones, the institution has a rich history of providing exceptional music education.

In addition to its academic programs, including short courses and offerings for both adults and school-age musicians, Leeds Conservatoire hosts a vibrant seasonal concert series, primarily held in its 350-seat auditorium, 'The Venue.' Notably, in 2011, the conservatoire achieved the prestigious All-Steinway School status, distinguishing itself as the sole conservatoire in England with 90% of its pianos sourced from the Steinway family.

Leeds Conservatoire transitioned to become a wholly owned subsidiary of Leeds City College in August 2011 and is presently a member of the Luminate Education Group. Regaining its status as a Higher Education Institution in 2018 marked a significant milestone in its journey.

Historically, the institution was established as the Leeds Music Centre in 1965, offering extracurricular music classes at the Leeds Institute building near Millennium Square. Over the years, it evolved, affiliating with Leeds University in 1971 and rebranding as the City of Leeds College of Music. Notably, in 1993, it pioneered the first Jazz degree in Europe.

In 1997, Leeds Conservatoire relocated to purpose-built premises on Quarry Hill, adjacent to renowned cultural institutions such as the Leeds Playhouse, Northern Ballet, and the BBC Yorkshire building. The conservatoire has undergone various transformations and expansions, including a notable £2 million refurbishment in 2012, enhancing its recording studios and performance spaces.

The Sounds Like THIS festival, initiated by Leeds Conservatoire, debuted in March 2017, showcasing innovative artists exploring diverse soundscapes. The festival received acclaim and support from Arts Council England, further highlighting the institution's commitment to artistic innovation.

In 2019, Leeds Conservatoire forged a partnership with Opera North, enriching its offerings and collaborations within the music community. Notably, in August 2020, the institution adopted the name Leeds Conservatoire, reflecting its expanded scope with the introduction of new degree courses in Musical Theatre, Acting, and Actor Musician.

Throughout its illustrious history, Leeds Conservatoire has remained dedicated to nurturing talent, fostering creativity, and contributing to the vibrant cultural landscape of Leeds and beyond.
