Brunel University London

Brunel University London, often just called Brunel, is a public research university in London, England. It started in 1966 and was named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel, a famous engineer from the Victorian era. The university got its official status in June 1966 and changed its name to Brunel University London in 2014. It's known as a "plate glass university."

The university is divided into three colleges. These are the College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences; the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences; and the College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences.

Brunel has over 16,000 students and about 2,500 staff. It has won awards, like the Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2011. The university is part of groups like the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Universities UK.

History Brunel University London is one of the universities that came about in the 1960s after a report on higher education. Its beginnings can be traced back to Acton Technical College, which split in 1957. One part became Brunel College of Technology, focused on engineering education.

The university's campus was designed in a style called Brutalism, which was popular in the 1960s. In 1962, the college was officially named Brunel College of Advanced Technology.

In 1966, Brunel got a royal charter and became Brunel University. It used two campuses until 1971 when it moved from the Acton site. In 1980, it merged with Shoreditch College of Education and expanded to a second campus.

In 1995, it grew again by merging with the West London Institute of Higher Education. This added more subjects to the university's offerings. Over time, the university has faced some controversies, like the decision to award an honorary degree to Margaret Thatcher in 1996.

In 2014, the university changed its name to Brunel University London. It celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016 with many events.

Campus In the late 1990s, Brunel made a plan to improve its campus over 10 years with £250 million. It sold off some other campus sites and used the money to upgrade buildings and facilities in Uxbridge, where its main campus is located.

The original campus was designed by Richard Sheppard, Robson, and Partners and has a distinct architectural style. It's been featured in movies and TV shows, including Stanley Kubrick's “A Clockwork Orange.”
