About
Australian Catholic University (ACU) is a university in Australia that welcomes students from all walks of life. It has a rich history and aims to provide quality education while upholding Catholic values.
History: ACU came into being on January 1, 1991, when four Catholic tertiary institutions in eastern Australia merged together. These institutions were:
- Catholic College of Education in Sydney, New South Wales
- Institute of Catholic Education in Victoria
- McAuley College in Queensland
- Signadou College of Education in the Australian Capital Territory
These institutions were established in the mid-1800s with the purpose of training teachers for Catholic schools and nurses for Catholic hospitals. Over time, through mergers, relocations, and initiatives from various dioceses, more than 20 historical entities contributed to the formation of ACU.
Governance: ACU is led by its Vice-Chancellor and President, Zlatko Skrbis, who represents the university nationally and internationally. Each faculty is headed by an executive dean, supported by associate deans and heads of schools.
Campuses: ACU has seven campuses spread across Australia: Ballarat, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, and Sydney (Blacktown, North Sydney, Strathfield). Additionally, ACU has a Leadership Centre in Adelaide and another one in Townsville. In 2015, the university expanded its reach by opening the Rome Centre in collaboration with the Catholic University of America, located in Rome, Italy. The Mount St Mary Campus in Strathfield is of historical significance and is heritage listed.
Student Life: Each campus of ACU has a student representative council, and there is a national student body known as the Australian Catholic University National Students' Association (ACUNSA), which advocates for students' interests. The university hosts annual national sporting events like the ACU Games, and students also participate in the Australian University Games, the country's largest multisport event.
Notable Alumni: Some notable alumni of ACU include Ellie Cole, a Paralympic swimmer and wheelchair basketball player.
Recent Media Attention: ACU has been in the news for various reasons. In March 2023, controversy arose when librarians were instructed to remove rainbow flags displayed across campuses, leading to objections from staff and students. In July 2023, ACU launched an internal investigation into its contracts with Asset Group Solutions (AGS) due to allegations of corruption against its founder. In September 2023, ACU announced plans to cut 113 full-time jobs, primarily at the Melbourne campus, as part of spending cuts to address a forecasted deficit.
