Founded in 1908 as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College on John Street, Hawthorn, Swinburne aimed to offer further education to residents of Melbourne's eastern suburbs. George Swinburne MLA, with support from Premier Thomas Bent, played a pivotal role in its establishment. By 1913, substantial funds, including generous contributions from Mr. and Mrs. Swinburne, facilitated the college's growth. Initially led by sculptor J.R. Tranthim-Fryer, the institution transitioned to state governance in 1913, becoming the Swinburne Technical College.
Over time, Swinburne evolved into the Swinburne Institute of Technical and Further Education (TAFE), later abbreviated to Swinburne Institute of Technology. In response to advocacy for increased tertiary education accessibility, Swinburne expanded its reach to outer eastern Melbourne in 1990. This endeavor led to the establishment of the Mooroolbark Campus, officially opened in 1992.
The university journeyed through various reforms and expansions, acquiring campuses and merging with educational institutes. Notable milestones include obtaining university status in 1992, establishing the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) in 1999, and inaugurating a campus in Sarawak, Malaysia, in 2000.
